MATA bus shooting suspect arrested, says MPD

The suspect has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and one count of possessing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The man accused of shooting at a Memphis Area Tranist Authority (MATA) bus last month has been arrested and is facing charges, according to the Memphis Police Department (MPD).

Police responded to a shooting call at Frayser and Calvary Creek at around 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 21, 2024.

Surveillance footage captured an argument between two men, followed by the shooting and its aftermath. MPD later released photos of the suspect.

Near the intersection of Ramill and Frayser-Raleigh Road, the suspect, identified as 20-year-old Rico Landford, got off the bus and discharged several shots through the open door, causing the windows to shatter. He then ran away on foot.

Police reported that the victim was grazed by a bullet and had several cuts from shattered glass. He was taken to Regional One Health in non-critical condition.

Landford was arrested on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2024.  According to the affidavit, he admitted to investigators that he fired shots at the bus. He has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and one count of possessing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony.

His bond has not been set, but he is scheduled to appear in court Friday morning.
