Memphis and Shelby County continue to shrink

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) For the 8th year in a row, the number of people leaving Shelby County is greater than those moving in.

Researchers at the University of Tennessee found that between July 1, 2017 and July 1, 2018, the net migration for Shelby County was 38,355. Also, for the 6th straight year, Memphis’ population shrunk. Memphis lost 944 residents in 2018, dropping one spot to number 26 in the ranking of the largest cities in the United States.

Other parts of the Volunteer State are experiencing growth. For example, unincorporated Knox County added 3,534 new residents, and Murfreesboro added 5,241 people, making it the fastest-growing city in the state.

Overall, 37,417 new residents were added to Tennessee cities in 2018 and 27,745 in unincorporated areas.
