Memphis Animal Services closes due to canine viruses

MAS said the shelter will remain closed to the public until further notice.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Animal Services (MAS) closed early Friday after canine viruses were discovered at the shelter.

MAS released a statement on Facebook around noon on May 3, regarding confirmed cases of dogs with canine distemper virus and canine infectious respiratory disease complex.

Those interested in meeting any pet will need to send an adoption inquiry by pet profiles, emailing mas@memphistn.gov, or calling 901-636-1416. Volunteers are still welcome to perform in-kennel enrichment for pets.

MAS said the shelter will remain closed to the public until further notice and updates will be released later.

"We will continue to operate via appointment only until further notice," MAS said in their Facebook post. "Operating by appointments gives us time to train/educate staff on how to properly counsel new potential pet parents on how to isolate and care for the dogs exposed. We are testing the entire population and will have more information to provide by May 10th or sooner."
