Memphis apartment complex residents say sewage is flooding their apartments

One renter says their unit has been having issues with flooding and raw sewage coming through their floor and bathroom drains for weeks.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Renters living in a Memphis apartment complex said they have been living with feces-contaminated water covering their floors for weeks while management does nothing.

There are feces coming out of pipes in both the front and the backyard of at least one of the Cane Creek Apartment buildings, and the bathrooms inside have more of the same.

For the last two weeks, there has been sewage water covering nearly every inch of renter Jessica Armstrong’s apartment.

Armstrong said it all started when the remnants of Hurricane Francine hit Memphis. She said her toilet started to back up, forcing sewage to come up through the drain in her shower.

Her next-door neighbor’s apartment is nearly identical, with sewage coming up through the pipes in the bathtub and completely covering the bathroom floor.

ABC24's Scott Madaus talked to the property manager, who said plumbers were on the way to fix the apparent plumbing problems, and cleaning crews would come to clean the possibly contaminated floors and carpet.

“I just want someone to come and fix the problem. We need someone to help us," Armstrong said.

Cane Creek Apartments has been cited by the City of Memphis for code violations, including the sewage problems. They will appear in court on Oct. 4.

After our report, the apartment complex decided to move Armstrong and her family to a new unit.
