Constant break-ins causing Memphis businesses — like 'Flowers & More' — to close indefinitely

"We have been broken into so many times, sometimes I don't even call the police," shop owner Telisa Franklin said.

The reality of crime's impact on business in Memphis once again has hit home for one store owner.

20-year business owner Telisa Franklin, operator of Flowers & More" in Highland Heights said she's closing her doors for good. Franklin said she's experienced constant break-ins at her flower shop.

"It's sad to see what you work so hard for — how people just come in and ramshackle your place," Franklin said.

Memphis public safety data shows that, from the beginning of July until mid-October, within a quarter mile of her shop, there have been at least 10 calls for breaking and entering and three calls for a burglary of a business.

"These mom and pop [shops] — they're out here with their whole life savings just trying to have a viable business and these criminals are coming over and over again," Franklin said.

The most recent time franklin says she was burglarized was Wednesday. Suspects reportedly took some of her merchandise, some large shop fans, computers and other items from her store.

"We have been broken into so many times, sometimes I don't even call the police," Franklin said.

Even though Franklin has been in business for 20 years, she said it's now not viable for her to remain operating at this location. She wants MPD to step up their patrols in the area.

"Community policing — know your people," Franklin said. "I would say to the police officers that are in this precinct, or any area in our city, build a relationship — not only when something is wrong. Go in there when something is right."

Franklin says she has some info on one of the suspects but so far, the police have not made any arrests.
