Memphis man ‘trying to hold up’ after losing mother, sister and cousin in Hickory Hill crash

Markel Anderson says it feels unreal losing his “close ones” in the deadly crash Tuesday night.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis family continues to mourn after three women died in a five-car crash Tuesday night in Hickory Hill.

The family has identified the women as 47-year-old Patrice Nadine Hughes, her 26-year-old daughter Dantrice Stanback and their cousin 26-year-old Shekila Sively.

Family and friends are holding a candle light vigil Thursday night at the scene of the crash at the S-Mart on the corner of East Raines Road and Kirby Parkway.

For Markel Anderson, this hits hard.

He lost his mother (Hughes), sister (Stanback) and cousin (Sively) in the fiery crash after teen suspect ran a red light trying to escape from Memphis Police.

“These are my close ones. These are my main ones,” Anderson said. “My sister, my momma and my cousin. These are the main people I see every day on a daily basis.”

Anderson described his mother was a good-hearted person who could never hold a grudge and would do whatever she could to make someone smile.

He says his sister was always there for him, recalling a time he ended up in the hospital and she showed up there just minutes after he called her.

Stanback and Sively were more like sisters than cousins to Anderson. He said Sively had just started her own cooking and baking business.

Anderson hopes he can stay calm during Thursday’s vigil.

“I’m going to be at the exact scene of what happened and there’s still like debris and burnt marks that are still around,” he said. “So I know I’m going to be emotional because that’s all I’m going to think about. The scene is just going to keep replaying in my head. Just going keep replaying.”

The family said Thursday’s vigil at 7:30 p.m. on Kirby Parkway will feature a balloon release with pink balloons for Sively, red for Stanback and gold for Hughes, their favorite colors.

Anderson added that Stanback’s 2-year-old daughter (his niece), who was also hurt in the crash, is alert and improving at the hospital.
