MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A celebration of life is planned for beloved Memphis musician Blake Rhea, who was shot and killed Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2024, after an argument outside a midtown bar.
Family and friends will celebrate Rhea’s life on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 4 p.m. at Railgarten at 2166 Central Ave.
Rhea played with musicians everywhere, including CYC, Gamble Brothers Band, American Fiction, Rabid Villain, Lord T & Eloise, Billy Gibson and the RVs, John Nemeth and the Blue Dreamers, and Grammy-nominated Southern Avenue.
He also taught his craft to the younger generations.
“He was a phenomenal teacher. Every time I pick up a bass, it's him. It's his spirit,” said Llana Williams, a former pupil of Rhea’s who became a music teacher alongside him at School of Rock.
"He was just very, very passionate. And he wasn’t just passionate as a teacher - you could see it the way he talked to you and the way he played. It was terrible news when we found out, and I just feel so bad for his family,” said Jillian Acor, another music instructor who worked under Rhea at School of Rock in Memphis.
“Blake’s contagious smile, inescapable laugh, kindness, and countless talents will be deeply missed by everyone fortunate enough to share space and time with him. He leaves us all an example of how to live and a beautiful legacy cast in his most important roles as a musician, teacher, coach, son, brother, and friend,” the family said in his obituary.
The family is asking friends and fans alike “to honor Blake’s memory by going to hear live music and supporting the music community he loved.”
Edward Wurl is in custody and charged with Rhea’s murder. He remains in the Shelby County Jail without bond.
