NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. — Memphis native and award winning actress/stuntwoman Carrie Bernans was critically injured Monday in a hit-and-run in New York City, according to her publicist.
The incident happened around 1:30 a.m. and also left eight others hurt, publicist Paul Christensen said. The driver crashed into an outdoor dining shed at Chirp, a Peruvian restaurant. The driver then backed up, hitting another car before officers came in.
Bernans can be seen in “The Color Purple” as well as Marvel's “Black Panther,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” and “Avengers: End Game.”
The publicist said Bernans and her family released the following statement:
"Carrie is in a critical but stable condition. Her family are forever grateful for the love and support they have received since this tragic accident happened this morning in NYC. They are grateful to God that her son was not with her and that he is safe and with her family. She is receiving excellent care and has a long road of healing and rehabilitation ahead. Her family kindly asks that you keep her in your thoughts and prayers at this time."
