Memphis neighborhood growing frustrated with huge piles of trash in front of homes

Many homes and properties in the Lakeview Garden area have large piles of waste sitting out on front lawns and driveways.

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn — A neighborhood in Southwest Memphis is growing frustrated as heaps of bulk trash pile up outside some of their neighbors’ homes, and they want more done about it.

Lakeview Garden has numerous homes and properties with bulk items on their front lawns and driveway areas for collection, with most of it not properly contained for pickup by trash services.

Several homeowners in the area are fed up with it and feel they are being ignored.

“It’s getting pretty rough now with all the overgrowth. Sometimes you can't even turn around. You can't even get around that corner safe,” said Rhonda Toney Humphrey, who lives in the neighborhood. “We want to see things cleaned up.”

Karen Collier, who also lives in the neighborhood, said she is getting bugs in her home.

“You're paying attention to downtown, but you're missing the city. We are being ignored," she said.

We spoke with the City of Memphis, who said they will be sending a team with the Solid Waste Management division out to inspect the area on Thursday morning.

“It's frustrating. It makes me want to do more, but there’s only so much I can do as an individual. It takes a community to bring things back together again,” said Humphrey.

The City of Memphis reminds all Memphians that each home has a designated bulk trash day and items should not just be left out for weeks at a time.
