MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis police have arrested multiple suspects they say are related to cars that were stolen in the Mid-South between late December 2023 and early January 2024.
Officers said they responded Dec. 23 at 1 p.m. to an auto theft at TJ Mulligans at 8071 Trinity Road. A victim told police that his Nissan Altima was stolen 30 minutes after midnight at this location, police said.
Officers said on Jan. 4 they saw a Nissan Altima with fraudulent temporary tags at Hawkins Mills near New Allen shortly after 7:30 p.m. Officers said they tried to get behind the vehicle to stop it but then lost sight of that vehicle.
While checking the area, officers found the car in the driveway at 3301 Keystone, according to the Memphis Police Department (MPD).
Officers said they saw suspect Marvin Watkins exit the vehicle at that point. They then detained him, according to MPD.
Officers said they saw several men then exit the address, with one throwing a weapon. The weapon was found and officers detained that man — Jordan Williams, according to MPD.
Officers ran a gun and a car and found that both were stolen, according to MPD.
Marvin Watkins, 18, was charged by police with theft of property between $2,500 and $10,000, according to MPD. Jordan Williams, 24, was charged with theft of a handgun valued under $2,500, according to MPD.
On Jan. 1 officers said they responded to an auto theft in the 2500 block of Courtney Drive shortly after 9 a.m. Officers said they were told that a victim's Dodge Charger was stolen between 2:30 a.m. and 9:20 a.m.
Officers were on the scene of a call in the area of Haliburton Street at 11:13 p.m., according to MPD. There, they heard a vehicle disturbance and saw a black Dodge Charger leaving the area that was occupied by a man in a red hoodie, according to MPD.
Officers said they found a man enter a residence on Tessland. They said they looked for the Dodge Charger and located it in the area of 4100 Windermere. After running the "VIN," officers said they determined the vehicle to be stolen.
The man walked toward the vehicle as officers were doing this, according to MPD. They then detained the man and located the key to the stolen car next to the man, according to MPD.
Kristopher Tolbert, 22, was charged with driving while his license was suspended/cancelled/revoked, according to MPD. He also was charged with theft of property from $2,500 to $10,000.
On Jan. 3 officers said they responded to the theft of a car in the 1600 block of Marjorie Street shortly after noon. Officers said they were told that a victim exited a vehicle briefly and had their back turned to it.
When this person turned around, his Toyota Camry was missing, according to MPD. The next day, officers reportedly saw the vehicle around 6 p.m. at 645 Chelsea Avenue. Before police approached the empty vehicle, a man walked out of the business and got into it, according to MPD.
This man was taken into custody, according to MPD. Deterrius Jones, 31, was charged with theft of property between $2,500 and $10,000. According to MPD, He also had two warrants for thefts of property between $1,00 to $2,500, 16 counts of petition to revoke a suspended sentence, possession of a controlled substance, theft of property between $2,500 to $10,000, auto burglary and convicted felon in possession of a handgun.
On Jan. 4, officers said they responded to an auto theft in the 10 block of Biscayne Road at around 7 p.m. Officers said they were told that a Ford Fusion was stolen while someone was inside a residence.
Officers said they observed the vehicle with no tags on the 10 block of Biscayne at about 9 p.m. Officers turned around to conduct a traffic stop, they said, when the vehicle stopped at Meadowbrook Road and Dunbar Street. Two of the three suspects ran away, according to MPD. One was apprehended in the vehicle and a second was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit, according to MPD.
A 15-year-old man was charged with theft of property between $2,500 and $10,000. A 14-year-old man was charged with theft of property between $2,500 and $10,000 as well as evading arrest on foot, according to MPD.
