MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police officers are investigating after one of their officers shot and killed a dog that charged and bit him, according to the department.
A Memphis Police report narrative said officers responded to a domestic violence call in the 900 block of Beatrice Street in Memphis' Highland Heights neighborhood.
While on scene, the report said a dog charged and bit the officer, who then pulled out his gun and shot the dog, killing it.
Memphis Police said the officer received minor injuries from the dog bite and was treated on scene.
When an ABC24 crew arrived, witnesses on scene said the dog was small, with one witness saying it was as small as five pounds.
We attempted to find MPD's policy on use of force against animals, but the department's online policy and procedures manual is missing the section labeled "response to resistance." We've reached out to the department for clarity, and they are working on giving us the missing policy section.
