Memphis Police hold Sea of Blue procession for fallen officer Demetrice Johnson

Johnson was killed Friday, Aug. 2, when a driver who had previously been shot crashed into his cruiser.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Police Department held a Sea of Blue procession for fallen officer Demetrice Johnson on Wednesday, Aug. 14.

Johnson was killed Friday, Aug. 2, in downtown Memphis when a driver who had previously been shot crashed into his cruiser. The driver also died. Another officer inside the cruiser was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

The week following the incident, MPD announced funeral arrangements for Johnson, the details of which can be viewed HERE.

MPD began the ceremony at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church and continued the procession to downtown Memphis.

Mayor Paul Young spoke with the media about Johnson during the Sea of Blue.

"It's a beautiful thing to see our community come together. If you looked at the processional, you saw officers from all across the region that came to stand in solidarity with [Johnson's] family and the community, and this is the kind of unification that we need," Young said.

Officer Johnson served with the Memphis Police Department for just over a year, graduating from the Memphis Police Department Training Academy in March 2024. He was assigned to North Main Station.
