MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is recovering after he was shot in an attempted carjacking on Monday morning at the Memphis International Airport. That man, according to police, is a rideshare driver in Memphis.
“What goes through your mind as a driver when you hear something like that? Finding another occupation," Latrecia McCarty, a Memphis-area rideshare driver for 10 years, said.
McCarty said the job is "not worth it anymore" due to safety concerns sparked by carjackings, robberies and murders.
She said she used to drive only during nighttime hours, but recently has switched to only daylight driving because she, like many, is terrified of becoming another statistic in Memphis.
"We are killing our cars, now people are killing us. Simple as that. You don’t know from one ride to the next whether you’re going to live through it or not," McCarty said.
Memphis Police said four masked men are suspects in the shooting, and they are on the run. No one has been charged.
The Memphis Airport Authority said that as a result of the crime, they are reviewing their security measures and will make adjustments to improve safety.
McCarty said she appreciates those efforts, but for her, it’s time to find another way to make money.
“In the meantime, I’m looking for a job. [The job] is not viable anymore, it really isn’t," McCarty said.
