MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The court convened Tuesday to address the ongoing receivership of Serenity Towers, as attorneys stress the urgent need for improved living conditions.
Seniors living in the troubled apartment complex known as Serenity Towers have yet another issue to worry about as residents face the possibility of losing power in near-freezing temperatures.
MLGW has issued a warning to the owner, Millennia Properties, stating that they must pay their utility bill by Wednesday.
Special Counsel for the City of Memphis, Carlissa Shaw, believes that residents still need to be evacuated due to ongoing issues.
"We don't think it's safe for people to stay there," she said.
This situation is just one in a long series of problems plaguing the building.
Just a week ago in court, the owner distanced themselves from responsibility, claiming they would not pay to address the deplorable living conditions at the property.
As a result, city attorneys placed Serenity Towers into receivership, meaning Millennia Properties no longer has full control over the complex.
Judge Patrick Dandridge questioned the city regarding the tenants' rent payments while they are serving as the receiver and managing the property.
Shaw stated that they will check in 72 hours to ensure that the heating is functioning properly.
Another court date is scheduled for Thursday, December 5.
