Memphis-Shelby County Schools faces potential loss of $30 million in federal funding

Memphis-Shelby County Schools may lose $30 million in federal funding from the Head Start program due to violations, impacting over 3,000 preschool families.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis-Shelby County Schools could potentially lose $30 million in federal funding.

The funding comes from the Tennessee Department of Education Head Start program.

It provides more than 3,000 preschool families with more affordable and sustainable options for education.

MSCS has received the funds for years but violated at least three requirements.

Newly installed board member Towanna Murphy said this could push students back in the classroom.

That right there is the core - where we need to catch those kids at the Pre-K level," she said. "And if we can't catch them at the Pre-K level, then we lose a whole generation of children. And so that funding is needed for our Pre-K kids."

The application for MSCS is expected to open in October, and if there are no deficiencies found in this school year, that grant would become effective in July.
