MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Metal Museum is expanding to Overton Park in midtown Memphis.

The museum says it is the “nation’s only institution dedicated to fine metalwork.” It has now leased Rust Hall, which was the home of the former Memphis College of Arts for six decades.

Museum officials said in a news release that the expansion will include a $25 million investment which includes renovating the 80,000 sq. ft. building. Funded by donations, they said they are still working to raise a remaining $6 million needed to start construction.

The museum is working with Los Angeles-based wHY Architecture to create a multi-use campus for art space, education, community events, and more.

Museum leaders said they are not giving up the museum’s current space in downtown Memphis. It will keep the original site as a residence for visiting working artists.
