MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Millington motel has been shut down as a public nuisance.
The Shelby County District Attorney’s Office and Millington Police held a joint news conference Wednesday, May 15, 2024, announcing the closure of the Super 10 motel at 7925 Highway 51 North in Millington.
D.A. Steve Mulroy said the closure came after “persistent criminal activity and community disruption" and numerous complaints from citizens. He said a judge signed the nuisance order May 14, the day before the closure.
Millington Police said they looked at two years worth of data and found ‘rampant criminal activity' from March 2022 through April 2024. They said they responded to calls at the hotel about 260 times during that time, and made dozens of arrests, some of which even happened in the hours before the closure.
Police said there have been charges involving prostitution, sexual assaults, drug overdoses, and guns at the motel, as well as code violations.
“The closure of the motel marks a significant milestone in the collaborative efforts between the Shelby County District Attorney's Office and the Millington Police Department to improve community safety and quality of life,” said a news release on the closure. “The decision to shutter the motel underscores the commitment of both agencies to address businesses that serve as hotspots for criminal activity and nuisance behavior.”
In order to reopen, the D.A. said the motel owners will have to meet several requirements.
“That means 24/7 security,” said Mulroy. “It means enrolling in the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office anti-trespass program. It means giving law enforcement full access to their video surveillance, and it may also involve doing warrant checks for guests to make sure that there’s not further criminal activity going on.”
Mulroy said the goal is to rehabilitate the hotel so it can reopen without the criminal element.
