MEMPHIS, Tenn — It's almost time to drip those faucets.
Memphis Light Gas and Water (MLGW) said they are preparing for severe weather the week of Jan. 8. They said this includes high winds, freezing temperatures and possible snow.
The energy supplier is asking that customers prepare their homes and businesses by protecting water pipes and also checking on automated sprinkler systems.
MLGW reminded customers that water pipes can burst anytime temperatures are below freezing. A burst water pipe or water heater is considered to be an emergency situation, MLGW said, and can potentially lead to flooding inside of a building.
Customers are asked to open cabinet doors and turn their water to a slow drip to prevent pipes from freezing. They also can wrap pipes in pipe insulation, which is available at hardware stores. Towels and clothes can also help prevent pipes from freezing, according to MLGW.
In the event that pipes do freeze, citizens are asked to contact MLGW's emergency contact number at 528 4465. Customers are also told to turn off the main valve inside their houses in this instance if possible.
As water main breaks can also occur when temperatures drop, MLGW said they are "prepared to work around the clock if needed" to handle any weather-related power outages.
MLGW said they prepare for cold weather by tracking the weather, having additional crews on standby and ensuring that their equipment as well as vehicles are ready with the tools needed. Tree-trimming crews have also cleared about 465 miles to help reduce power outages, MLGW said.
