MLGW says power is back after outage affected 14,000+ customers, as well as businesses & traffic lights around Memphis

MLGW said power was restored around the city about an hour after the outage started, but they're still trying to figure out what happened.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Light, Gas and Water said power is back on for most of the city after outages halted businesses, homes and traffic lights. 

The power outage map showed 425 outages affecting more than 14,000 customers at 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2023.  

ABC24 crews reported outages in the Poplar Plaza area and parts of Binghampton and traffic lights out along Highland Ave., Jackson Ave. and other streets in the area.

Wednesday, MLGW said power was restored to customers within the hour after a transmission line interruption. Additionally, they said they are still "investigating the root cause" of the outage.
