A mother is facing several charges after her son fired shots on Trezevant High School grounds, according to an affidavit from Shelby County court records.

Austin Peay station officers said they responded on March 22 to a shooting call at Trezevant High School, according to the affidavit.

A complainant said that a person fired a shot at two victims while on school grounds, according to the affidavit. School staff told police that the suspect and victim had been in a physical altercation in class before the shooting.

The suspect had been checked out of school by his mother Deborah Rawls after the fight during school hours, according to the affidavit. They were occupying a Black Sedan, according to the affidavit.

The affidavit said it was observed that the suspect returned to the school and waited for the victims to be dismissed. The suspect then immediately confronted the victims with a handgun, according to the affidavit. He fired the weapon, according to the affidavit.

Rawls was seen exiting the Sedan and running towards her armed son, according to the affidavit. The son was then chased by school security with the mother following, according to the affidavit.

Both the mother and her son were picked up by the Black Sedan, which drove away heading northbound on Trezevant Street toward Frayser Boulevard, according to the affidavit.

The mother never contacted police regarding the fight or the shooting, according to the affidavit.

On April 11, she and her son were taken into custody after a warrant was issued and she provided written consent to scene officers. A gun was found in a black duffle bag located in the son's bedroom, according to the affidavit.

The mother was advised of her rights and refused to speak with investigators regarding the fight, according to the affidavit. She was taken into custody and transported for booking and processing, according to the affidavit.

Deborah Rawls is charged with accessory after the fact, two charges of attempted murder in the first degree, possession of firearm/dangerous felony, reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon and carrying a weapon on school property.
