Memphis Police are investigating after they say nearly $13,000 worth of firearms were stolen from a vehicle.
The theft was reported about 6:10 a.m. Wednesday in the 6000 block of Shelby Oaks Drive in northeast Memphis. Investigators say the thief broke a window in the vehicle to get inside.
According to the police report, the victim said he parked his car in the parking lot of the Baymont Inn and Suites about 9:00 p.m. Tuesday night. When he went out at 5:20 a.m. Wednesday morning, the driver side rear window was broken, and about 30 guns (rifles, handguns, muzzleloaders, and shotguns) from inside were stolen. The victim said he stored the ammunition in a different location, and it was not taken.
The victim told police he was moving from Virginia to New Mexico, and was worried about breaking state and federal laws, so he left the guns in his car.
Police say the man was able to provide make, model, and prices for the guns. He provided serial numbers for several also. He told police the moving company has a complete inventory list. According to the report, the total value of the guns stolen is $12,900.
