MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police Department officials have announced Sharonda Hampton as the new interim assistant chief of administrative services.

Hampton began her career with the Memphis Police Department on Jan. 20, 1986, according to her online profile.

"On March 31, 1986, she entered the Training Academy as a Police Recruit. Upon completion of basic training on June 28, 1986, she was assigned to Uniform Patrol at the East Precinct," her bio reads. "As a Police Officer, she worked various assignments which included the East Precinct Bravo and Charlie shifts, South Precinct Bravo and Delta shifts, and Vice Squad."

She became a deputy chief in 2016.

Hampton's appointment follows former Assistant Chief Shawn Jones being removed from the same role.

Memphis Mayor Paul Young did not say that Jones was fired, instead saying that he would no longer be employed with the city.

"We believe that he has done great work with the city, but it is time for him to move on," Young said.

Mayor Young said this was not due to his residency as there was no violation, but based on what would help take MPD to the next level. Young said he had made that position sometime around budget season.

Chief Davis said Jones was provided some kind of assistance for relocating to Memphis, and that his role was not a permanent position from the start.
