MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A driver is recovering after the Memphis Police Department said they ran a red light, causing a crash between them and a Memphis Police squad car.
Officers responded to the crash on South Cleveland Street and Union Avenue around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.
There, they found the wrecked MPD cruiser and another car. One person was taken to the hospital in non-critical condition. The officer in the squad car was uninjured
MPD said the crash investigation found the driver of the other car ran a red light on Cleveland, when the squad car, which had a green light on Union, hit them on the driver's side, causing them to spin out and crash into a metal utility pole.
The driver was given a citation for running the red light and driving without a license.
MPD said their vehicles have been involved in 315 crashes in 2024 alone, with 209 of them being not at fault of the officers.
