MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police told ABC24 they have cleared the scene after reports Monday of a man walking around part of midtown near local schools with a rifle in plain sight.
There was an outpouring of concern from parents on social media after the reports of a man walking along Peabody Ave. near Cooper St. and then near schools in the area.
According to MPD on Monday, they were made aware of the complaint, but were unable to locate the man.
“Officers checked the area for the individual and have since cleared. Officers are patrolling the area. He wasn’t accused of committing a crime or making threats,” MPD responded to our questions.
MPD updated Tuesday, saying officers eventually found the man and confronted him, but he told officers he wished no one any harm, and when his background check came back with no criminal history, he was allowed to leave.
One school in the area told ABC24 they activated their planned security measures amid the reports.
