MEMPHIS, Tenn. — September marks Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Awareness Month, highlighting a condition that affects millions, according to the Heart Rhythm Society.

AFib is characterized by an irregular heartbeat that can feel like a rapid heart rate. It can lead to serious complications, including blood pooling in the heart, which may result in blood clots, strokes, and heart failure. Recognizing the signs and understanding the risks associated with AFib is crucial for effective management.

AFib can be triggered by different environmental factors, such as smoking, and is often linked to conditions like diabetes. Understanding these causes can help individuals identify their risk and take proactive measures.

As Dr. Joseph Okolo emphasizes, “Awareness is where it starts.” Being attuned to changes in heart rhythm and recognizing palpitations is vital. Increased awareness can lead to early detection, which significantly improves outcomes.

Dr. Okolo also notes, “It is absolutely important to have a month like this where we raise awareness for conditions such as atrial fibrillation,” highlighting its prevalence as the most commonly diagnosed arrhythmia.

One common misconception is that AFib primarily affects older adults. Dr. Okolo reminds us, “We shouldn’t blow off atrial fibrillation as a disease of the older folks,” stressing that it can affect anyone, even younger individuals.

Ignoring symptoms can lead to severe consequences, ranging from discomfort to potentially irreversible health issues like heart failure or a stroke. If you experience symptoms of AFib, it’s important to consult with your healthcare provider.
