MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – Memphis has a fair amount of supermarkets, but somefolks aren’t close enough to stores to be able to get the healthy food theyneed.
A new mini-documentary by British-based news outlet “The Guardian” is putting the problem of Memphis food deserts in the spotlight.
A YouTube video of the 13-minute documentary focuseson two people in south Memphis and the hurdles they face to get to asupermarket to shop for fresh meat and produce.
It also features a community housing developer who’sbeen trying to get a grocery store in south Memphis for four years, and a Le Bonheurnutritionist who says diabetes and hypertension is rising among young kids whodon’t have access to quality foods.
A report by Feeding America says there are more than 185,000 people in Memphis who are food-insecure.
