Nobody trashes Tennessee. A statewide campaign was held Friday to promote the “Great American Cleanup” and increase litter prevention awareness across the state.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation partnered with more than half a dozen grocery chains by giving out reusable bags at more than 480 grocery stores across the state, including at a Kroger in east Memphis.
Authorities say although roadside trash is down more than 50%, litter is still a big problem.
“There are a hundred-million pieces of litter on our Tennessee roadways. In addition to that, TDOT spends $15-million annually in litter-prevention in the state. So, if we can reduce the amount of litter, then we can reduce the costs,” says Denise Beard Baker with TDOT.
