Oakland Elementary School dismissed early following a threat

Fayette County Sheriff's Office said the dismissal was out of an abundance of caution.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Oakland Elementary School students were dismissed early Thursday out of an abundance of caution following a threat.

Fayette County Public Schools Superintendent sent a statement saying a threat was made against the elementary school and all students are safe.

Students were transported by bus to West Junior High School gym and that a 1 p.m. dismissal would occur at West Junior High. Parents are asked not to go to Oakland Elementary School.

Fayette County Sheriff's Office officials said that they are on scene and waiting for canine units from Shelby County Sheriff's Office to sweep the area.

"We would like to stress that these actions are being taken out of an abundance of caution and all students are safe," Fayette County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Raymond Garcia III said in a statement.

ABC24 reached out to the Fayette County Sheriff's Department following their arrival but there are no additional updates.
