Officer In Ripley Shoots Suspect

At the request of the office of the 25th District Attorney General, TBI Agents continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding an officer-involved shooting that occurred Wednesday evening in Ripley.

Preliminary information indicates the incident occurred at approximately 6:30 PM CT, shortly after a separate shooting in the area of Jefferson Street and Nesbit Street. Responding officers from the Ripley Police Department located and followed a vehicle believed to be connected to the shooting incident, after which the vehicle stopped and three subjects exited the vehicle and produced firearms. The situation further escalated and resulted in one Ripley officer firing a service weapon, striking one of the three individuals. Medics subsequently transported the injured subject to the hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening. Neither of the two other subjects nor the law enforcement officers sustained injuries during the incident.

TBI Agents will gather evidence, information, and interviews in connection with the investigation into the officer’s actions. The investigation into the shooting incident that occurred prior to the officer-involved shooting will be conducted by the Ripley Police Department. Agents will submit investigative findings to the office of the District Attorney General for his further review and consideration. As a reminder: The TBI acts as independent fact-finders in its investigations and any determination as to whether the officer’s actions were justified rests solely with the District Attorney General.

The TBI does not identify officers involved in these types of investigations and, instead, refers such inquiries to the respective local law enforcement agencies.
