The public is getting a first look at the Memphis Grand Carousel being restored by the Children’s Museum of Memphis.
The Dentzel carousel is more than 100-years-old, dating back to 1909. It was originally purchased by the Memphis Park Commission in the 1920’s, and it was used at Libertyland until it closed.
You can ride the carousel at the Children’s Museum starting in November.
“We’ll be able to accomplish our mission, which is to have fun learning, and hands-on teach our children, learning about restoration and how important the history is, and how important the craftsmanship of the horses are,” says Art Davis.
The carousel will be housed in a brand-new pavilion. The total cost for the project is about $5 million.
