MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A late-night welfare check led to the arrest of a 20-year-old man on multiple charges after drugs and a gun were found in his car, according to The Olive Branch Police Department (OBPD)

Emergency 911 communications received a call around 8 p.m. on Dec. 14, about a car stopped at the intersection of Highway 302 and Craft Road. OBPD responded to the scene and attempted to make contact with the driver but were unsuccessful because of the car's heavily tinted windows.

Using flashlights, officers noticed a rifle on the driver's lap and a strong smell of marijuana. Officers deployed stop sticks beneath the car and retreated to a safe position while waiting for backup.

Multiple units from OBPD and the DeSoto County Sheriff's Office arrived to help. Despite repeated attempts to communicate through the officers' PA system, the driver did not respond. According to the police report, the car eventually moved forward, coming to a stop on Craft Road, just north of the intersection.

In order to get a better view of the inside, officers used a beanbag round to break the back window of the car. Upon inspection, officers discovered the driver sleeping and confirmed the presence of alcohol and a rifle in the car.

A drone was deployed through the broken window, which startled the driver and prompted him to drive the car into the parking lot of a nearby Walgreens, according to OBPD.

Jermel James Moore, was taken into custody without further incident. He has been charged with possession of a controlled substance enhanced by a firearm, possession of drug paraphernalia, obstructing traffic, open container violations, and violations related to window tint.
