Police: One person dead, officer injured after shooting in Jonesboro

The Jonesboro Police Department has confirmed that one person is dead after a shooting involving an officer took place on W. Jefferson Street.

JONESBORO, Ark. — The Jonesboro Police Department responded to a disturbance on Tuesday, January 9 in the 1100 block of Jefferson Street that resulted in a shooting, leaving one dead.

According to reports, the dispatch center received a call regarding an altercation between a father and his adult son at a home on West Jefferson St. A witness also stated that the son was armed with a knife.

Upon arrival, an officer confronted 26-year-old Joseph Lee McCrackin Jr. of Little Rock. A physical altercation broke out, and the officer fired his service weapon, striking McCrackin. 

Emergency services responded to the scene, where they later pronounced McCrackin dead. The JPD officer was transported to a local hospital to treat minor injuries sustained in the altercation.

Arkansas State Police have been called in to take over the investigation. The name of the officer involved has not been released at this time.

An investigative case file will be presented to the prosecuting attorney, who will determine whether the use of deadly force was consistent with Arkansas law.
