One injured in MATA bus shooting, says MPD

The Memphis Police Department (MPD) reports that a shooting on a MATA bus, triggered by an argument between passengers, left one person injured.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A shooting that stemmed from an argument between two Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) bus passengers left one person injured, according to the Memphis Police Department (MPD).

MPD responded to a shooting call at Frayser and Calvary Creek. Preliminary information indicates that the incident broke out after a dispute between two passengers on the bus.

After the argument, the suspect was removed from the bus, at which point they fired a shot at the bus. The victim was grazed by a bullet and was taken to Regional One Health in non-critical condition.

MPD reported no other injuries from the incident, and the suspect fled the scene on foot in an unknown direction.

No charges have been filed, and the investigation is ongoing.

In response to the shooting, MATA issued a statement to the public:

The Memphis Area Transit Authority has been made aware of a shooting of a passenger on a MATA bus. We are deeply saddened by the unfortunate incident, and we remain committed to the safety of our riders and operators. We are cooperating with authorities during this investigation and ask that all inquiries be directed to the Memphis Police Department.
