Memphis 3.0: Added walkability, more diverse housing stock heading to Orange Mound

Orange Mound residents are making their voices heard at a Thursday town hall on infrastructure issues facing the community.

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — Residents of Orange Mound made their voices heard on Thursday in a Memphis 3.0 town hall to advocate for what they would like to see done to help revitalize their community.

A key city goal as part of the program is adding a more diverse housing stock in Orange Mound.

“When I say diversity, I mean single family housing not being the focus," said Comprehensive Planning Administrator Kendra Cobbs. "Definitely, we will keep single family housing, but we also need to have options for other people who might not want to be in a single family household.”

Another of the major initiatives that is coming out of the program is to make Orange Mound more walkable, including improving safety at dangerous intersections on Park Ave. and at Lamar, Kimble and Pendleton.

Cobbs said safety is paramount in any of the new developments brought about by the Memphis 3.0 plan, particularly for children walking to and from school in the area.

“With Orange Mound being a historic district and a historic area, one of our first African-American planned communities in the country. Having a focus in the important areas in Orange Mound and invest in those communities,” she said.

Anyone who is interested in making their voices heard on infrastructure improvements in their neighborhood can visit the Memphis 3.0 website HERE.

“We’re looking at zoning from a high level based on our land use map. What are the changes that can be made? That goes back to zoning so that the desires within the community are met,” Cobbs said.
