Shelby County General Sessions Court Clerk to waive $100 expungement petition fee, host clinic

The General Sessions Court Clerk's Office will hold a resource fair Saturday with an expungement clinic from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Abundant Grace Fellowship Church.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Shelby County General Sessions Court Clerk Tami Sawyer announced starting Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024, her office will begin waiving the $100 fee to file a petition to expunge a conviction.

That same day, the General Sessions Court Clerk's Office will hold a resource fair with an expungement clinic from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Abundant Grace Fellowship Church, located at 1574 E. Shelby Drive. Legal professionals will be on hand to provide free consultations and guidance on the process.

Expungement allows for certain crimes to be removed from a person's records. Not every crime qualifies. Learn more about expungement in Shelby County HERE.

"We believe that everyone deserves a second chance," said Sawyer in a news release. "Our goal with the expungement clinic is to empower individuals to move forward in their lives, free from the burdens of the past.”

The resource fair will also feature help with housing, job readiness, health services, financial literacy, and activities for the whole family.

The news release from the Clerk's Office did not say how long the fee waiver would last.
