MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Charges have been dismissed for a mother whom Memphis police said fired a gunshot at the father of her one-year-old daughter and then took off with the child, according to court records.
The 21-year-old mother had been charged with aggravated assault. Court records show those charges were dismissed 'Nolle Prosequi' on Oct. 4.
(Note regarding "Nolle Prosequi" dismissals from the Shelby County D.A.'s Office: "It is crucial to remember that a case's dismissal in general sessions does not necessarily indicate that it is concluded. A judge may dismiss a case in general sessions for several reasons but this does not preclude the DA’s Office from seeking an indictment.")
The incident led to police issuing a City Watch on Tuesday, Feb. 27, before the baby was found.
MPD investigators said the child was taken after an argument broke out between mom and dad, leading to the mother firing a gunshot and then taking off with the infant in a SUV. Court records said the woman also maced the father before running away.
Hours later, about 4 p.m., MPD said the child had been located. Further details were not released.
