The Memphis Redbirds will be playing for a new principle owner when they open the season tomorrow at AutoZone Park. The St. Louis Cardinals will maintain a minority stake in the team.
Redbirds general manager and now president Craig Unger officially introduced Peter Freund during a news conference Wednesday afternoon.
Freund is a minority owner of the New York Yankees and president of his family business, Trinity Packaging.
Freund told the crowd he has simple, yet long term goals, for the team to provide family friendly and affordable entertainment and to embrace baseball in Memphis.
He says they’ll continue to focus on giving back to the community, partnering with local businesses and working on the Memphis brand.
“It is the best city with the single best venue in minor-league baseball, in the best league in minor-league baseball with what I believe to be the second best affiliate in minor-league baseball behind it, and it is why I’m here today,” said Freund.
Freund says he had a great meeting with Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland and that this will be an opportunity to bring business back to Memphis.
Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak says the Redbirds and Cardinals will remain the St. Louis Cardinals Triple-A affiliate through the 2020 season.
