MEMPHIS, Tenn.(localmemphis.com)- South Memphis is known to be the home for the Stax record label, giving the neighborhood an afro-futuristic vibe.
Musicians and artists gathered at the corner of Mcmillan and Waldorf for an informational celebration of home and community on Saturday.
The South Memphis Future and Funk Festival welcomed guests of all ages to learn more about fair housing, renters rights and home ownership.
“It’s important because it gets people out, you know it gets people out talking to each other and getting to know each other and it kinda gives some hope so you can see on the lots there’s a lot possibilities with some investment and community outreach and care great things can happen,” said Amy Schaftlein of United Housing.
Organizers say the neighborhood is proof that “funk and future” have always been a beacon of its beauty and a sustaining source of its pride.
