Robert Knecht to retire as Memphis Public Works director

Robert Knecht is retiring from his position after 23 years with the city.

MEMPHIS, Tennessee — Public Works Director Robert Knecht is retiring from his position after 23 years with the city, according to Memphis city officials. 

Public Works is the third largest division of city government and oversees Memphis's infrastructure, including streets, sewers and bridges. 

Knecht's retirement will take effect next month. A specific retirement date has not yet been released, according to city officials.

"His work in sustainability and blight remediation will pay dividends for decades to come, and his shoes will be hard to fill," Memphis Mayor Paul Young said in a statement.
