How to safely celebrate the 4th of July

A doctor at Saint Francis Hospital warns of potential dangers while grilling or using fireworks for Independence Day celebrations.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — People across the Mid-South are preparing to celebrate Independence Day. But those Fourth of July celebrations could quickly become dangerous if you don't take the right precautions.

Dr. Audrey Mills, Emergency Department Manager at Saint Francis Hospital, warns of those potential dangers. Dr. Mills said around this time of the year, they see an uptick in injuries. She said most of the injuries are among small children and young adults.

"We've had some eye injuries come in. That's another thing, please don't shoot fireworks from your hand. A lot of hand injuries from that. Burns," said Dr. Mills.

Each city and town has different rules. In most of Shelby county though, fireworks are illegal but firecrackers and sparklers are OK to use at home. Still, Dr. Mills said these can be dangerous, especially for small children.

"We suggest you use substitutions in place of sparklers like confetti poppers, streamers," said Dr. Mills.

Along with fireworks, people will also be pulling out the grills to celebrate. This should be done with proper safety precautions in mind as well.

"We want to avoid leaving your grill unattended. Make sure your kids aren't anywhere near your grill as well. Also make sure that you're not grilling right there next to your house. Next to your house. Any structures. Any trees. Any plants," said Mills.

The American Red Cross said the safest way to enjoy fireworks is by attending a show put on by professionals. Click here for a list of fireworks shows in the Mid-South.

The National Fire Protection Association offered up the following tips for grilling:

  • For propane grills, check the gas tank for leaks before use in the months ahead. (Watch NFPA’s video on how to check for leaks below.)
  • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.
  • Place the grill well away from the home, deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
  • Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it.
  • Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grilling area.
  • If you use starter fluid when charcoal grilling, only use charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire. When you have or are finished grilling, let the coals cool completely before disposing in a metal container.
  • Never leave your grill unattended when in use.
