School cafeteria workers may earn $15 per hour

The push to pay cafeteria workers in Shelby County Schools a living wage is gaining steam.

SHELBY CO., Tenn. (localmemphis.com) The push to pay cafeteria workers in Shelby County Schools a living wage is gaining steam.

County Mayor Lee Harris joined union and faith leaders today to show their support for cafeteria workers.

Last year, SCS said it would pay all full-time employees a $15 per hour living wage. Mayor Harris says it’s time for the more than 680 part-time cafeteria workers to join them.

“The work of our cafeteria workers is as worthy and important as the work of anyone else in the school building, including the work of the principal,” said Mayor Harris.

Mayor Harris said this could cost the county anywhere from $1.8 million to $5.6 million but believes the final cost will be on the lower of end of the scale.
