MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – Shelby County Schools Superintendent Joris Ray wants to make sure former Memphis Tiger and Memphis Grizzlies star Lorenzen Wright’s legacy is honored.
Ray sent a letter to University of Memphis President M. David Rudd, published in the Commercial Appeal, asking that the school retire Wright’s jersey.
In the letter, he says he noticed that Wright’s number-55 jerseywasn’t among the ranks of retired Memphis athletes during the Tigers’ gameagainst Ole Miss. Ray then broke down Wright’s Memphis history, includingplaying for the U of M and his professional career in the NBA.
Right now, Precious Achiuwawears the number-55 jersey for the basketball team.
Wright was killed in July 2010, and his ex-wife Sherra pleadedguilty to her role in his death in July. Billy Ray Turner is still facing trialfor his involvement in Wright’s murder.
