A Shelby County Deputy continues to recover Sunday night after being hit by a car on duty Saturday night.

Angela Winfrey, who has been with SCSO for 17 years, was hit by a driver around 11:30 p.m. Saturday while the deputy assisted another driver.

It happened in a construction area on Austin Peay, not far from Covington Pike in Raleigh.

Angela Winfrey was assisting a stranded motorist when she was struck by a passing vehicle, said the sheriff’s office.

SCSO said Winfrey’s flashlight was pointed in the opposite direction of the oncoming car and that the driver stayed at the scene. There was no reported alcohol or drugs.

Deputy Winfrey suffered a broken leg, broken ribs and other injuries but SCSO leaders said she will be fine even though she faces months of recovery.

“Very bubbly personality, always waves, polite,” is how one of Deputy Winfrey’s neighbors, Charlotte Grimes, described the mother of two.

The news of the deputy’s injuries spread fast and hit hard Sunday afternoon.

“Hate to hear that. She’s a very good person,” Darrell Speight said.

Deputy Winfrey is recovering after accidentally being hit by a car on patrol late Saturday night.

“Very fortunate, she’s got some very significant injuries but will be OK and will survive,” Shelby County Assistant Chief Deputy Mark Dunbar said.

SCSO leaders said the driver who accidentally hit the deputy while she tended to another driver will not be charged.

“Individual was very remorseful, he stopped and rendered aid as quick as he could,” Chief Deputy Dunbar said.

Local 24 was told Deputy Winfrey spent the day surrounded by family and her fiance, as she begins a month’s long recovery process.

“She’s very upbeat, she’s one of those that can’t wait to get back to work, talking to her, I believe she’s never missed a day of work since she’s been at the sheriff’s office,” Dunbar said.

Meanwhile, those who often drive on this unlit, weaving construction area of Austin Peay said Deputy Winfrey’s accident should be a wakeup call to everyone.

“Pay attention is very important, just pay attention,” Paul Fields said.

“For a deputy to get hit and she was helping somebody else out that’s kind of personal,” Miesha Whitten said.

Those with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said they’ll investigate the incident to determine if anything else could have been done differently.
