MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man has been charged with second degree murder who told police he was under the influence of crack, according to an affidavit from the Shelby County Sheriff's Office.
Elton Nelson, 33, is also reportedly facing charges of aggravated assault and criminal attempt felony.
The affidavit from the Shelby County Sheriff's Office states that MPD officers received "a suspicious call" at 1483 Parkway regarding an unknown man sitting on a woman's front porch on Dec. 21.
When officers spoke to this man (Nelson), he said he thought he killed someone at 1077 Merriweather — an abandoned apartment complex, according to the affidavit. The affidavit states that Nelson told officers that he was smoking crack with his friend above apartment #5, according to the affidavit.
Then, Nelson told police that he blacked out and that he thought he struck his friend with a pole, according to the affidavit. When officers made the scene on Merriweather, they found a woman who was unresponsive and bleeding from the head, according to the affidavit.
This woman was transported to Regional One in critical condition, according to the affidavit. She suffered three stab wound to her head, one to her right eye and one to her right forearm, according to the affidavit.
Nelson was then arrested and transported to 170 South Mainstreet to speak with investigators, according to the affidavit. Nelson was read his Miranda Righs and decided to invoke them, not speaking any more with an investigator, according to the affidavit.
He then was transported to 201 Poplar, according to affidavit.
