Shelby County Board of Education implements personal one-hour meetings for superintendent's mid-year evaluation

The Shelby County Board of Education decided to maintain the evaluation process for the superintendent following discussions and implement 1-hour meetings with her.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Shelby County Board of Education has decided to keep their end-of-year evaluation unchanged after intense discussions at a retreat Monday, Oct. 21.

However, there will be a more personal mid-year evaluation involving one-hour individual meetings with superintendent Marie Feagins instead of a written evaluation.

Transparency was a key issue at the retreat, and some board members expressed concerns about transparency from the superintendent. There were discussions about shifting the focus of the evaluation criteria, but more board members support keeping the current assessment rubric for the superintendent's end-of-year evaluation.

"This is about us giving her some informal suggestions and feedback on what we see, anticipate and want to see before the end of the year," said Natalie McKinney, an MSCS board member.

As discussed on Monday's meeting, up to one-hour individual meetings with Dr. Feagins will be scheduled for board members in their mid-year review, and as of Tuesday, no written notes will be allowed during these meetings.

"I'm not so good or clear on doing the informal because I just want to ensure everything is out in the open, and transparency is a given that we should do," board member Towanna Murphy said.

"I am going to write down my questions and provide the superintendent with a response as soon as I leave the meeting," Stephanie Love, another MSCS board member, added.

The board must finalize the evaluation rubric by Nov. 1 and hold those individual meetings with Feagins by Nov. 30.
