Shelby County Jail detainee dies from apparent overdose, according to sheriff's office

The sheriff's office said the official cause of death has yet to be determined; however, the preliminary investigation appears to be an overdose.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Shelby County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) said they are investigating the death of a detainee that occurred Tuesday, Dec. 18, at the main jail at 201 Poplar. 

The detainee, who has been identified as Wesley Joyner, 29, was found by corrections personnel shortly before 5:30 p.m. after being found unresponsive in his cell, according to officials. 

Staff members and Memphis Fire Department paramedics took lifesaving measures. Memphis Fire transported him in critical condition to Methodist University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival at 6:32 p.m., according to the SCSO.

The sheriff's office said the official cause of death has yet to be determined; however, the preliminary investigation appears to be an overdose. 

Detectives will not know for sure until information comes back from the medical examiner's office, according to the SCSO.
