Shelby County Sheriff's Office investigating inmate death at jail in downtown Memphis

The sheriff’s office said 49-year-old Jerome Mimes died about 6:20 p.m. on July 22, 2024, in the main jail at 201 Poplar.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said an investigation is underway after the death of an inmate Monday.

The sheriff’s office said 49-year-old Jerome Mimes died about 6:20 p.m. on July 22, 2024, in the main jail at 201 Poplar. They have not said how he died.

“Preliminary information from SCSO detectives suggests no signs of foul play, however, the official cause of death has yet to be determined by the medical examiner,” said the sheriff’s office.

The SCSO said Mimes was being held in the jail for the Germantown Police Department.

Germantown Police said Mimes was being held for failure to appear in court for a previous arrest for simple possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and theft of property.

GPD said that its own jail is a 72-hour holding facility, so when a person is unable to make bond within that time frame, they are taken to the Shelby County Jail until their next court appearance or bond is posted.
