Shelby County jails receive certification for combatting sexual assaults

All three Shelby County Sheriff's Office jail facilities have received certification from the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA).

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) announced Thursday that all three of its jail facilities have received certification from the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA).

PREA is meant to protect incarcerated inmates from sexual assault and abuse within prison facilities.

The SCSO said all three of its facilities, the men’s jail at 201 Poplar Avenue, the women’s jail at 6201 Haley Road, and the Youth Justice and Education Center at 3420 Old Getwell Road were certified.

The sheriff’s office said it has adopted a ‘zero tolerance’ policy at the jails, and that while they have been fully compliant with PREA requirements, they asked for a years-long review for the certification. They said free hotline phones among other methods are available for inmates, families, and staff to report assaults.
