Shelby County residents and businesses hit by storm, causing thousands of power outages

Memphis, Light, Gas and Water reported more than 6,000 people were in the dark Monday night.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Dozens of businesses and thousands of Shelby County residents were without power Monday night as high winds reached 60 miles per hour.

Memphis, Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) reported that more than 6,000 people were in the dark. One of the more popular business areas in northeast Memphis at the intersection of Whitten Road and Appling Farms Parkway lost power. A Walmart Supercenter and multiple gas stations had to close early due to the storm.

MLGW said they have crews driving around the Memphis area working to restore power. They said the outages continued throughout Monday.

Terron Bynum told ABC24 he was hoping to grab a few groceries at the Walmart Supercenter, but couldn't due to those outages. He hopes MLGW will do a better job when the power goes out.

"I hope so because it be very strenuous on the people that's living and residences of Memphis when it be bad weather or too hot, too cold and you don't have no lights," Bynum said. "I'm very optimistic that we're gonna get it together, but we haven't all this time so I don't know. You never know."

MLGW said when outages are more sporadic such as the ones that occurred on Monday, residents and customers shouldn't assume they know when your power is out.

Those who have not reported losing their power are urged to call (901) 544-6500.
