MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Shelby County Grand Jury will hear the case against an 18-year-old charged in a crash in a stolen vehicle that injured a Shelby County Sheriff’s deputy.

Jarvis Thomas faces charges of evading arrest, reckless driving, and theft in that case. He also faces charges of theft, evading arrest, and reckless driving in previous cases where investigators said he ran from law enforcement in a stolen vehicle, and even more charges in another case involving a stolen vehicle and guns. He is currently out of jail after posting a total bond of $90,000 in all the cases.

In the incident that injured the deputy, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office said about 3:50 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, 2024, deputies were in the area of Crump Rd. and Running Brook in southeast Shelby County. Investigators said a stolen black Nissan Maxima pulled out in front of the deputy, and they crashed.

The SCSO said a suspect, later identified as 18-year-old Jarvis Thomas, was driving the Maxima and ran from the scene but was caught a short time later in a nearby neighborhood.

They said Thomas was treated at the scene for minor injuries, and the deputy was taken to Regional One Health in non-critical condition.
